Northern New Mexico Fishing Report 6/23/2026

Fishing the Rio Grande, Pecos and other Santa Fe area rivers is still pretty good, despite extreme low water.  At Embudo they have been taking data on the Rio Grande flows for 127 years, and flows are flirting with the lowest values ever recorded.  For 6/23 the lowest recorded is 182 cfs and we are at 188.  Combine this with the heat, and that's really impacting fishing options.

Fishing the Rio Grande is still decent, but GET OUT EARLY IN THE MORNING.  You have to be aware of stream temperatures where you are fishing.  I've been measuring 62-64 degrees in the morning, hitting 66 by around 11am.  Playing a trout above 67 degrees or so is usually fatal to the fish, so plan on ending early.

Usually I would be recommending hitting smaller alpine streams at this point, but they don't have much water either.  So use your discretion.

Pecos is a similar story, although water temps are not as high.  Fish on the Pecos often hang in really small pockets, so pools are great but there are fish throughout the river.  Hopper dropper rigs are productive and fun now.
